The RMH Surgical Clinic and Valley Vascular Associates will host a free varicose vein screening from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on March 19 at the RMH Hahn Building Medical Offices on the RMH health campus.

According to the website womenshealth.gov, varicose veins are enlarged veins that can be blue, red or flesh-colored. They most often occur on the thighs, backs of the calves, or the inside of the leg. They often look like cords and appear twisted and bulging. They can be swollen and raised above the surface of the skin.

“Varicose veins are not just a cosmetic problem; if left untreated, varicose veins can progress to a more serious form of venous disease,” said Dr. Gregory Montgomery, vascular surgeon with Valley Vascular Associates.

Varicose veins can be caused by weak or damaged valves in the veins. Dr. Montgomery explained that in healthy veins, valves keep blood pumping through the veins back to the heart. In varicose veins, the valves no longer work well, causing blood to pool in the veins, often causing swelling and pain.

While anyone can have varicose veins, they are most common in women. Varicose veins affect half of people age 50 and older.

The screening is a one-on-one meeting with a vascular surgeon. During the screening, the surgeon will assess the condition of the veins and determine if the participant is a candidate for varicose vein treatment. If the participant is a candidate, a follow-up appointment will be made. Dr. Montgomery said most varicose vein procedures are performed in the office, not the operating room. Most insurance plans cover varicose vein treatments.
