In observance of Prevent Child Abuse Month in April, several local agencies are looking for volunteers to help plant a pinwheel garden on Court Square in Harrisonburg at 4 p.m. April 17.
RMH Childcare Connection, Hand in Hand, Healthy Families and the Collins Center are collaborating to raise awareness of children’s needs and to remind the community of the need to work together to ensure children are safe. These groups have been given permission to plant 1,000 pinwheels, which they have purchased, on Court Square.
Prevent Child Abuse America has designated the pinwheel as the symbol for child abuse prevention, explained Reagan Eshleman, coordinator of RMH Childcare Connection. She noted that a number of localities in Virginia have subsequently planted “pinwheel gardens” at focal points in their communities as a way to raise community awareness.
The “pinwheel garden” will be planted in the triangle on the west side of the Court House building, Eshleman said.
To view pictures of some of the pinwheel gardens in other communities, go to the Prevent Child Abuse Web site, www.preventchildabuseva.org, then click on the link for Prevention Month, followed by the link to Pinwheels for Prevention.
For more information or to volunteer, contact Eshleman at 540-564-5661 or reshlema@rhcc.com.
