To educate both youth and adults on how to stay safe on the farm and around the home, RMH will host the 14th annual RMH/ Bowman Progressive Agriculture Home and Farm Safety Day 10 a.m.-2 p.m. March 13 at the Rockingham County Fair Grounds.
The cost is $5 per person, $10 per family. The day camp includes activities and demonstrations for children ages 5-14 and those 15 to adult.
“Through an event that is fun for the family, our ultimate goal is to make children and adults more aware of potential hazards they encounter every day, and help them prevent, injury, illness or even death as a result of working on the family farm or around their homes,” said Steven Phillips, MD, medical director, RMH Center for Corporate Health.
Partners in the camp include local agricultural businesses, fire departments, rescue squads, civic and service groups, farming experts, and hospital staff, all of whom volunteer their time to provide training on a wide range of farm and home safety topics.
New additions to this year’s lineup include: wilderness first aid; “Cut the Grass, Not Your Toes”; Eddie the Eagle gun safety; fire, animal and driving safety, and more.
Kids ages 5-14 also may participate in the Richard Pfamatter Safety Day slogan contest. Participants may compete to create a slogan for Safety Day around the question, “What does home and farm safety mean to me?” Entries may be submitted upon arrival.
“The secret to the success of the program is that the camp is as fun as it is educational,” said Vickie Davis, clinical patient service representative, RMH Center for Corporate Health, and camp co-leader. “A lot of children in our area are exposed to farm equipment, and some of them actually operate it. A top priority at RMH is the safety of our community. Children can actually teach their families based on what they learn in this hands-on event.”
Dangers around the home and farm cause as many as 20,00 deaths, 7 million disabling injuries and 20 million hospital trips in the U.S. each year, said Sue Custer, Safety Day coordinator.
“Despite these statistics, most adults say they can’t think of anything they should do to make their homes safer,” she added. “Our goal is to show them how.”
Complete registration and payment is required by March 5. To register, call RMH HealthSource at (540) 433-4850.
