Photos Depict Ways Teens Make an Impact in Local Community
Shout Out Harrisonburg/Rockingham, an initiative of the Strong Families/Great Youth Coalition working to reduce youth substance abuse, has named the winners of its winter 2014 photo contest.
Teens in grades 9-12 were asked to submit photos that show how they give back to the community and what impact this service makes. They were allowed to submit up to five original photos.
“From the photo submissions, it was obvious to see that teens in our community are involved in more than just sports and studying; they spend a great deal of time giving back,” says Becky Johnston, Health Promotion Specialist at Sentara RMH Medical Center and Shout Out contest coordinator. “This year’s submissions were all fantastic, which made the judging very difficult.”
Winners were as follows:
- First place: Ashlyn Shoemaker, Harrisonburg High School, “Kindness Chain”
- Second place: Brittany Shook, Page County High School, “Blessing Bags”
- Third place: Ashley Comer, Page County High School, “Zero to Hero”
The winning photos can be viewed on the Strong Families/Great Youth Coalition website at www.sfgyc.com/contests.
The winners received Massanutten Water Park passes, an Ipod Shuffle and a $20 gift card to Kline’s Dairy Bar. “These were just small gestures of appreciation for the work these young people are doing to make this community a great place to live,” says Johnston.
Shout Out Harrisonburg/Rockingham, found primarily on Facebook and Twitter and at www.sfgyc.com, connects teens in Harrisonburg/Rockingham County with positive information and volunteer opportunities. It has offered teen photo contests twice a year since 2011.
