Are you eligible? How do you get coverage through Medicare D?

Anyone on Medicare is eligible for prescription drug coverage. Private firms provide the coverage. Although their plans must meet Medicare’s stringent rules, companies may differ in terms of costs and coverage. You can compare plans by clicking here.

In most cases, if you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage health plan, you’ll get your prescription drug coverage through that plan. If you have drug coverage already (from a former employer or union, for instance), your insurer will let you know how that coverage stacks up to standard Medicare Part D coverage.

To join a Medicare prescription drug plan you must have Medicare Part A or Part B. In contrast, to join a Medicare Advantage plan, you must have Medicare Part A AND Part B. You must also live in the service area of the Medicare plan you want to join.
