The RMH coding team has placed 22nd in the nation for excellence in inpatient coding.
The recognition came from Ingenix, a coding software industry leader. Ingenix reviewed more than 4,600 hospitals across the nation before selecting the top 200.
The RMH coding team reviews patient medical records and assigns codes used for billing and clinical data analysis. The team includes three clinical documentation specialists, five inpatient coders and 26 outpatient coders, including seven outpatient facility coders and 19 outpatient coders at RMH clinical practices.
Mike King, senior vice president, finance, and chief financial officer, presented the award to the team on Nov. 20. “Our patients can be assured that our coders do the utmost to ensure accuracy so medical records appropriately reflect the patient’s clinical condition and care received,” he said, commending the team.
Darla MacDonald, manager, Coding and Central Scheduling, said the award is a great honor for her team.
“This is the first time we’ve received the award, and it comes after the most challenging year our coding team has ever experienced,” MacDonald said. “We recently converted to the Medicare Severity-Adjusted Diagnostic Related Grouping (MSDRG) and began carrying out on-admission analysis for every diagnosis assigned by physicians. To come in at No. 22 in the nation while navigating significant organization-wide change is quite exceptional. I’m very proud of the team.”
