Joyce Kuhns has been named director of the RMH Laboratory.
In this new role, Kuhns will oversee the department’s staffing, equipment and financial needs. She had served as assistant director of the Laboratory since 1987.
“Joyce’s long-term commitment to the Laboratory, her in-depth understanding of Lab operations and her familiarity with the staff make her an excellent choice as director,” said Dick Pierce, vice president, Ambulatory Care.
Before serving as assistant director of the Laboratory, Kuhns also served as the supervisor of hematology 1976-1987 and as director of the RMH School of Medical Technology from 1985-1986.
“I have a real passion for the education aspect of our department,” Kuhns said. “Having the medical technology school at RMH really keeps all of us on our toes in terms of continuing education and keeping abreast of new technologies.”
Kuhns earned her bachelor of science degree at Madison College (now James Madison University), where she majored in medical technology. She completed her clinical year in medical laboratory science at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. She joined the RMH Laboratory in 1971 as a medical technologist.
