RMH and Safe Kids of the Central Shenandoah Valley will host the Trauma Trot cross country run June 16 to support the RMH Emergency Department Bicycle Helmet Initiative.

The RMH Emergency Department Bicycle Helmet Initiative provides free bicycle helmets to children visiting the RMH Emergency Department. The cross country run will begin at 7 a.m. at the Burtner Farm in Penn Laird and will feature 8K, 5K and 1K runs.

“Tragic injuries from bike accidents are mostly preventable,” said Jane Miller, ED operations manager. “No child riding a bike should be without a helmet.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 500,000 bicycle injuries and 700 deaths occur each year.

The 8K and 5K runs are open to all runners while the 1K is available for children under the age of 14. Parents may run with their children in the 1K at no cost. Awards for the 5K and 8K will be given based on age divisions. The top-three finishers in the children’s race will also receive awards.

Local rescue workers will be at the cross country run to provide educational materials for children and families. There will also be a rock wall available, provided by Massanutten Adventures.

Entry fees are: $30 for 8K, $25 for 5K and $15 for 1K.
