In response to the wishes of its donors, the RMH Foundation has revised its guidelines for outreach grants benefiting healthcare needs in the community.
RMH Foundation Community Outreach Committee Chair Stephanie Pence said a survey showed 88 percent of RMH donors wanted Foundation grants to be used for projects where community organizations and RMH departments work together.
“We’re truly excited about making these changes that encourage community organizations to partner with RMH departments to meet healthcare needs.” Pence said. “We hope this will further extend RMH services to our community.”
Pence said, in response to the 2012 Healthy Community survey, priority will be given to programs focusing on the detection and management of chronic diseases. The grant review will be done by the Foundation’s Community Outreach Committee which is composed of representatives from RMH and the community.
Pence said in 2012, the RMH Foundation plans to award up to $75,000 in grants. The RMH Foundation is asking submitted projects be meaningful, measurable and in line with the mission of RMH and Sentara Healthcare.
RMH Foundation Vice President Merv Webb said RMH has always been committed to community outreach.
“This community outreach is done in many different ways, including volunteer services of our staff, RMH support of organizations like the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Free Clinic and the Harrisonburg Community Health Center, and money grants by the RMH Foundation,” Webb said. “While most of the gifts to the RMH Foundation are used for equipment and program needs, the Foundation Board also wants to support the improvement of health at the grass roots level.”
Webb said in 2011, the RMH Foundation made eight community grants totaling $59,951, while also supporting several public health screenings.
