During Older Driver Safety Awareness Week (ODSAW), Dec. 5-9, RMH Rehab Services will host a series of lunch and learn programs to educate older drivers and their families about how to maintain their independence on the road.
“Safe driving is about ability, not age,” said Clark Upton, RMH CarFit Coordinator and certified occupational therapy assistant. “RMH Rehab Services encourages older drivers to take an active role in maintaining their ability to drive safely.”
The programs, offered in conjunction with the American Occupational Therapy Association, will be held from noon-1 p.m. at the Cecil F. Gilkerson Community Center in Harrisonburg. Community members of all ages are invited to bring lunch and attend.
The week’s topics include:
- Dec. 5: Family conversation
- Dec. 6: Screening and evaluations
- Dec. 7: Driving equipment and adaptations
- Dec. 8: Taking changes in stride
- Dec. 9: Life after driving
“With baby boomers reaching retirement age, one in five American drivers will be older than the age of 65 in the next two decades,” Upton said. “It’s time we talk about ways older drivers can stay on the road safely and discuss possible modes of alternate transportation when needed.”
CarFit is a free, community-based program designed to enhance comfort and safety for older drivers. CarFit is offered through RMH Rehab Services.
