The RMH Hospital and Health Campus has been honored by BUILDINGS magazine as a Project Innovations Grand Prize winner for 2011.
BUILDINGS presents the annual project innovations awards to commercial and institutional facilities that demonstrate design and operational excellence. RMH was the grand prize winner for new construction and was featured on the cover of the October edition of BUILDINGS.
“It’s quite an honor to not only be recognized for innovation, but to win the grand prize and make the cover,” said Dennis Coffman, RMH director of Facilities Planning and Development and project manager for the new hospital. ”This award isn’t limited to just healthcare buildings; it’s given across the building industry. It’s a huge accomplishment to have such a nice building that is also sustainable.”
The project was submitted for the award by Earl Swennson Associates (ESa), architects for the new hospital.
The article highlights the sustainability features of the new hospital that led to it becoming the first LEED Gold-certified hospital in Virginia. These features include the hospital’s use of renewable energy via tri-fuel boilers that can burn methane from the county landfill; storm water runoff and wetlands management; interior design using low- or no-VOC products; and exterior light pollution control.
The article mentions how designers sited the building to take advantage of the existing terrain while avoiding disruption of natural surroundings.
“One of the biggest design obstacles was siting the building to avoid wholesale excavations while working with the natural contours of the land,” said Harold Petty, AIA, director of medical design for ESa. “Layout and design of the 630,000-square-foot hospital took advantage of the rolling terrain by creating a split-level of public spaces so that patients, families and staff could enjoy views of the picturesque Shenandoah Valley.”
