RMH obstetrician and gynecologist M. Catherine Slusher, MD, of Harrisonburg OB/GYN Associates, has been appointed by Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell to serve a three-year term on the Virginia State Board of Health.
According to its mission statement, the State Board of Health provides leadership in planning and policy development for the Commonwealth and the Virginia Department of Health to implement a coordinated, prevention-oriented program that promotes and protects the health of all Virginians. In addition, the Board serves as the primary advocate and representative of the citizens of the Commonwealth in achieving optimal health.
The priority public health issues addressed by the Virginia State Board of Health are prevention and control of chronic disease; reduction of disparities in health care and health status; improvement of Virginia’s public health infrastructure; and improvement in the health and well-being of all Virginians.
“The Board oversees health policies, helps make sure healthcare is affordable, and also has oversight over such things as clinic management, medical laboratory management, food service and restaurant management and water control—whatever has an impact on the health and welfare of citizens of the Commonwealth,” Dr. Slusher explained. “It involves mostly working with policies and procedures. I’ve been doing policies and procedures for obstetrics and gynecology in this hospital for the last 10 years, so it’s a good fit.”
Dr. Slusher will have her first meeting with the board on Sept. 15.
“My heart is with OB/GYN, but I’m excited to work with the Board of Health,” she said. “It’s a chance to get involved in healthcare on a different level—to expand my horizons and hopefully have a positive impact on the lives of other Commonwealth residents. And I’ve been highly supported by some of my partners, by the RMH Administration and by some of the legislators I’ve worked with over the years. I’m awed by the support I’ve received.”
Dr. Slusher graduated from Marshall University School of Medicine in Huntington, W.Va. She completed her internship at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and her OB/GYN residency at Carilion Health System in Roanoke. She is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology.
She joined the RMH Medical Staff in 1994. Since 1997 she has served several terms as chair of OB/GYN, and since 2009 as director of obstetrics at RMH.
She and her husband, Don Flegel, have three children: Drew, Julie and Macie Clements.
