Alpha Phi Sorority of James Madison University has raised $13,575 to provide free heart health screenings through the RMH Heart Check program.

Heart Check is a heart health screening and education program that assesses a person’s risk for coronary artery disease, the most common form of heart disease today and the number one cause of adult deaths in America.

“We are grateful for the outstanding support of the Alpha Phi Sorority,” said Maria Hostetter, RN, RMH Heart Check navigator. “Because of their generosity, the cost of 65 percent of RMH Heart Check appointments in 2010 was covered. Their gift directly benefits members of our community. With their support, RMH can continue providing this important disease prevention service at an affordable rate.”

The cost of the Heart Check screening, which includes a blood lipid panel and a 1-hour one-on-one consult with a heart health nurse, is $50.

The sorority raised the money through events held in February, including a 5K race and a Red Dress gala--part of the American Heart Association’s national campaign for women’s heart health awareness. Through its annual Cardiac Care Award, the Alpha Phi Foundation helps fund research and education programs that support women’s cardiac health.

“We are dedicated to improving heart health and educating others about the value of philanthropy, and each year we try and top what we raised the previous year,” said Danielle Girard, Alpha Phi member and co-chair for this year’s fundraising events. “Alpha Phi has long understood the value of serving others, and we are proud to help RMH and members of the Harrisonburg community in any way we can. We’re grateful, too, for their partnership and support.”

The Alpha Phi Sorority has raised more than $62,800 for RMH Heart Check through its annual fundraisers since 2006. The funds are deposited into the RMH Heart Fund, managed through the RMH Foundation. For information on how to contribute to this fund, contact Hostetter at 540-433-4319.
