Volunteers plant a pinwheel garden to raise awareness of Child Abuse PreventionIn observance of Prevent Child Abuse Month in April, local agencies are looking for volunteers to help plant a pinwheel garden on Court Square in Harrisonburg at 1 p.m. April 2.

RMH Childcare Connection, Hand in Hand, Healthy Families, JMU and the Harrisonburg/Rockingham blue ribbon coalition are collaborating to raise awareness of children’s needs and to remind the community of the need to work together to ensure children are safe. These groups have been given permission to plant 1,000 pinwheels, which they have purchased, on Court Square.

Prevent Child Abuse America has designated the pinwheel as the symbol for child abuse prevention, explained Reagan Eshleman, coordinator of RMH Childcare Connection. She noted that a number of localities in Virginia have subsequently planted “pinwheel gardens” at focal points in their communities as a way to raise community awareness.

The “pinwheel garden” will be planted in the triangle on the west side of the Court House building, Eshleman said.

Community members also may help raise awareness by purchasing pinwheels, sold for $1 each, at downtown vendors including The Children's Museum, Beyond, Clementine, The Yellow Button, You Made it! Pottery and the Little Grill Collective. These may be added to the pinwheel garden on Court Square, or displayed at home or the office.

To view pictures of some of the pinwheel gardens in other communities, go to the Prevent Child Abuse Web site, www.preventchildabuseva.org and click on the link for Prevention Month, Pinwheels for Prevention.

For more information or to volunteer, contact Eshleman at 540-564-5661 or reshlema@rhcc.com.
