The sixth annual “Bridging the Health Gap” fair will highlight free health screenings, educational presentations and activities aimed at the African-American community on Saturday, Oct. 16 at the Lucy Simms Continuing Education Center in Harrisonburg.
The day begins with a historic walk starting at the Simms Center at 11:30 a.m., followed by the health fair from 1-3 p.m. RMH staff will provide free health screenings and education for diabetes and heart disease.
“Nearly one in three African-Americans has high blood pressure, compared to one in four whites,” said Janet Marshman, RN, stroke education coordinator. “Heart disease is the leading cause of death in African-Americans. That’s why it’s so important to ensure proper education and disease risk screening for this population of our community.”
Other events include free Zumba demonstrations provided by the RMH Wellness Center. An RMH pharmacist will be available to educate participants on proper prescription medication disposal.
Other participating organizations include the American Cancer Society and the Harrisonburg Rockingham Dental Clinic.
The Simms Center is located at 620 Simms Ave. in Harrisonburg.
