Olumide A. Danisa, MD, a spine surgeon with RMH Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, has been appointed to a three-year term on the Patient Safety Committee of the North American Spine Society (NASS).
The Patient Safety Committee is responsible for development and oversight of all NASS patient safety activities and education. The NASS fosters high-quality, evidence-based, ethical spine care by promoting education, research and advocacy. Its more than 5,000 members represent a wide range of specialties, including orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, psychiatry, neurology, radiology, anesthesiology, research, physical therapy and other spine care professionals.
“This is a great honor because, even though it’s the North American Spine Society, the scope of NASS influence and its membership are truly international,” said Dr. Danisa. “The Patient Safety Committee establishes guidelines for spine patient safety for the entire world.”
Since 2007, Dr. Danisa has served as an editor for The Spine Journal, an official publication of the NASS. The Journal publishes original, peer-reviewed articles on spine research and treatment, including basic science and clinical investigations. Dr. Danisa also is a member of AOSpine of North America, an organization that works to improve patient care, patient outcomes and cost-effective surgery for spine patients. He regularly lectures throughout the United States on spine surgery.
“Dr. Danisa’s appointment is a clear indication of his surgical peers’ respect for his judgment and knowledge,” said John McGowan, MD, president and CEO, RMH Medical Group. “His activity on the committee fits well with the Safety First initiative at RMH. This core value assures our clients that every member of the inpatient and outpatient staff is focused on their well being. Congratulations, Dr. Danisa.”
Dr. Danisa graduated from medical school at the University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville, where he also completed his internship and residency. He completed a fellowship in adult spine surgery at Duke University Health Systems in Durham, N.C. He is board certified in orthopedic surgery and has been a member of the RMH Medical Staff since 2005.
