Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville today announced its intent to become part of Sentara Healthcare.
In July, RMH also announced its intent to merge with Sentara Healthcare.
Martha Jefferson Hospital is a 176-bed not-for-profit hospital founded in 1903. It has 1,600 employees and a staff of about 470 physicians. A new hospital is under construction, with plans to open in 2011.
“Martha Jefferson Hospital is a strong and well-respected institution. Its decision to merge with Sentara Healthcare attests to its Board’s understanding of the challenges facing independent hospitals and the value of being part of a health system,” said RMH President and CEO Jim Krauss. “RMH enjoys a collaborative relationship with Martha Jefferson and we have worked together in various clinical and non-clinical areas. Should both our intended mergers go through, we look forward to having a Sentara “sister hospital” in our part of the state with whom to collaborate.”
The RMH-Sentara and Martha Jefferson-Sentara relationships will be similar, Krauss noted. “In our announcements regarding Sentara, we described our arrangement as an affiliation, which is a general term,” he said. “However it is accurate to say that we are coming together into one system, or “merging” who we are into one system. “
RMH Board Chair Barbara Stoltzfus noted that while the RMH Board was aware of Martha Jefferson’s intentions to seek a partner, that knowledge had no impact on the board’s decision to seek affiliation with Sentara. “RMH’s decision to join Sentara was made independently, based on our belief that affiliation with Sentara will help to ensure that high-quality healthcare is available in our community to meet the needs of our residents for generations to come,” she explained.
Krauss added that Martha Jefferson is on the leading edge in patient satisfaction and has very strong clinical services, such as its women’s program. “I feel we have much to offer each other as sister hospitals,” he said. “We are excited about the possibilities and opportunities that our mergers will provide our patients and our communities.”
