Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation will hold its eighth annual “Race to Beat Breast Cancer” 5K to benefit RMH breast cancer patients on Oct. 23 at Westover Park.
The event will begin with breast cancer survivor testimonials at 9 a.m., followed by the race at 9:30 a.m. Runners and walkers are welcome.
The funds raised will help provide breast cancer patients at RMH with educational and support materials, along with helping purchase new technology and equipment at the RMH Women’s Center and Cancer Center.
“We wanted the proceeds of this annual race to go toward a good cause, but also to go back into the local community,” said Erik Dart, athletic program specialist, Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation. “That’s why we selected RMH Breast Cancer Fund as the beneficiary. We wanted to make sure the people involved in the race see their money stay local and put a face to where it’s going—to their friends and family.”
Teresa Boshart-Yoder, director, RMH Women’s Services, thanked Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation on behalf of the patients who will benefit from the funds raised.
“We are grateful for the partnership of Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation in raising awareness and funding for breast cancer treatment,” said Boshart-Yoder. “This event is particularly meaningful for breast cancer survivors who are given an opportunity to share their stories before the race. Participants may also purchase a sign in memory of, or in honor of, a loved one with breast cancer. This is a special event for the community.”
The first 500 participants to register by Oct. 13 will receive a free T-shirt. Teams of five or more receive a discount. Registration is $20 before Oct. 13, and $25 from Oct. 14-20. Registration ends Oct. 20. Race day registration will not be available.
