FAQs Regarding the RMH Brand/Name Change Why is RMH changing the hospital’s name to Sentara RMH Medical Center? RMH became a part of the Sentara Healthcare system on May 2011. RMH chose Sentara as a merger partner because of its excellent state and national reputation, its not-for-profit mission and its compatible culture. Thus, the name change will position RMH as part of a quality, innovative, medically advanced, highly technological integrated health system that is now accessible to our community.
Our new name is consistent with Sentara’s current naming architecture while retaining the familiar “RMH.” It is a celebration of our partnership with Sentara Healthcare and all the benefits that this partnership brings to our patients, our physicians, our staff and our community. The term “medical center” also speaks to the growing and comprehensive nature of RMH services, including advanced heart and vascular services, comprehensive orthopedics and sports medicine, cancer care, women’s services and more.
The name change is also a reflection of the hard work that has been undertaken by our staff, physicians and volunteers to improve the service and care we provide through our partnership with Sentara Healthcare. RMH and Sentara are better together thanks to shared knowledge and implementation of best practices in many areas of care.
What other changes might we see related to the launch of the Sentara brand in our community?
The Sentara brand represents quality, patient safety and patient-centered care, as well as innovation, advanced medical breakthroughs, and leading-edge technology. Its mission is to improve the health of the communities it serves. Thus, any changes in healthcare delivery will be in support of that mission.
How was the new name selected?
The name was chosen after many hours of deliberation and research, including input from physician leaders, RMH leaders, the RMH Foundation Advisory Board, community members and others.
Are all areas of RMH changing their names to Sentara?
All areas, with the exception of the RMH Foundation, are adopting the Sentara Healthcare brand. As part of our merger agreement, ALL donations to the RMH Foundation remain in our community to improve health and promote wellbeing. Therefore, for clarity, the RMH Foundation will not adopt the Sentara name. RMH programs and service names will reflect the Sentara brand; e.g., RMH Imaging Services will become Sentara RMH Imaging Services; the RMH Funkhouser Women’s Center will become the Sentara RMH Funkhouser Women’s Center.
When is the new name official?
While we are beginning to talk about the new name now, it will become “official” on Jan. 1, 2014. That is the day we will start referring to ourselves as Sentara RMH Medical Center and focus intently on introducing the Sentara brand to our community.
What will happen to RMH’s green and blue logo?
We will no longer use the RMH green and blue logo because our new brand is Sentara. Thus, we will adopt and begin using the gold Sentara logo exclusively on Jan. 1, 2014.
When will exterior and interior signage, as well as other logo-branded items, change?
We are developing a plan for replacing signage beginning Jan. 1, 2014. As you can imagine, this process will take some time. We also are working on a timeline for getting updated uniforms, business cards, ID badges, stationery and the like launched in January 2014. The full transition may take six months to a year.
When will staff begin answering the phone as Sentara RMH?
On January 1, 2014.
Will RMH undergo any more name changes as part of Sentara?
RMH has a strong brand identity in our community, and Sentara is aware of this as well as of the loyalty our patients have to us. Therefore, RMH will remain in each of the sub-brands (e.g., Sentara RMH Heart and Vascular Center, Sentara RMH Wellness Center, etc.) for 18-24 months. We will then transition sub-brands to Sentara only. However, we will remain Sentara RMH Medical Center.
