During National Donate Life Month in April, RMH celebrates the generosity of those who have saved lives by becoming organ, tissue and eye donors and encourages others to follow their lead.
One donor can save as many as nine lives through organ donation, enhance more than 50 lives through tissue donation, and restore sight to two people through eye donation, according to Donate Life America.
RMH partners in the donation process with LifeNet Health, the federally-designated organ procurement organization for most of Virginia. LifeNet coordinates the recovery and placement of organs in Virginia, teaches the public about donation and handles a bereavement program for donor families.
According to LifeNet:
- More than 28,000 organ and tissue donations occur annually in the United States.
- More than 700 organ and tissue donations annually occur in Virginia.
- Three Virginians die each week waiting on an organ transplant.
- One donor can save up to nine lives through organ donation and enhance up to 50 lives through tissue donation.
In 2012, RMH had 13 tissue donors, two organ donors and three organs transplanted, according to LifeNet.
“Our two organ donors last year saved three lives and made a difference in multiple lives with their gifts,” said Brenda Hedrick, RN, nurse coordinator. “Organ and tissue donations are truly selfless gifts and we hope awareness will inspire more people in our community to consider this decision.”
