After Going Home—Family Care Program

Mothers and babies usually go home soon after delivery. Although you and your baby may be physically stable and able to go home, you may still be recovering from the birth.

The RMH Family Birthplace Family Care program provides a scheduled appointment, either at your home or at RMH, to check on you and your baby after discharge. During the visit, a Family Care nurse will assess you and your baby, answer questions and concerns, and provide you with any necessary referrals, if needed. Each Family Care nurse specializes in the care of new moms and infants and is either an internationally board certified breastfeeding consultant or has received special training in that area.

Typically, the Family Care appointment is scheduled within three to five days after discharge. However, appointments are available anytime for up to two weeks following delivery.

Program Cost: You can choose if you’d like for the nurse to see you at your home or at RMH. Appointments at home are $150; appointments at RMH are $75.

Scheduling Your Appointment: You can schedule your Family Care appointment at any time—during your hospital stay, or after discharge (up to one month after delivery). To schedule, speak with your nurse or call 540-689-3320.

New Moms Ask a Nurse—A support group

Having a baby is an exciting and challenging time for new moms. Along with the joy and happiness a baby brings, there can also be a lot of questions and uncertainty.

New Moms Ask a Nurse is a support group designed for new moms with a baby 12 months old or younger. Surrounded by other new moms, you’ll meet with a Family Birthplace nurse and learn answers to some of the most common questions about caring for and dealing with a new baby.

Each week, a different topic is discussed. Class topics include:

Survival
Parenting 101
Stressed Out and Feeling It!
Parent-Child Connection

When: Wednesdays. You can begin any time.
Time: 1:30-3 p.m.

Additional Information:
You’re welcome to bring your new baby. Childcare is not available for older children. If you attend all four weeks, you’ll receive a certificate to attend “All About Baby,” a series of RMH classes designed for parents with children under the age of two, for free ($75 value).
