Jim KraussJim Krauss
President, RMH Healthcare

Jim Krauss joined RMH in 2000 as senior vice president and chief operating officer. He was named president in 2007.

Krauss has more than 25 years of executive leadership experience in healthcare. Before joining RMH he served as executive vice president and chief operating officer of Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Florida when it became part of the BayCare Health System. He began his healthcare leadership career as assistant vice president and administrator of Baptist Outpatient Center, a subsidiary of Baptist Hospital of Miami, Fla.

He then served as vice president of clinical and support services for Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, Va. Next he served as vice president and chief operating officer of Winter Park Memorial Hospital in Winter Park, Fla. before going to Bayfront.

Krauss holds a master’s degree in health services administration from George Washington University and a bachelor’s degree from Pennsylvania State University. He served two years in Paraguay with the Peace Corps organizing and implementing developmental programs in public health.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He currently serves as a board member and a member of the finance/audit committee for WVPT, Virginia’s Public Television. He also serves on the Friends of Scouting Steering Committee of the Boy Scouts of America, Stonewall Jackson District; as a member of the Eastern Mennonite University Commission for Sciences; and as vice-chair for Solution Services Corporation.

Krauss also is a past board member of the Harrisonburg Rotary Club and the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce, and a past member of the Mary Baldwin College Healthcare Advisory Council. He also has served as a member of the Regent’s Advisory Council of the American College of Healthcare Executives, Virginia Area A.

Dale Carroll, MDDale Carroll, MD, MPH
Senior Vice President, Clinical Effectiveness/Chief Medical Officer

Dale Carroll, MD, MPH, joined RMH in 2000. He is a native of Rock Hill, South Carolina. He graduated cum laude from Furman University, Greenville, SC, and received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. He is a 1996 graduate of the US Army War College and received a master’s degree in Public Health at the University of Washington.

He completed a Family Medicine and Preventive Medicine residencies in the Army. He also completed the Faculty Fellowship in Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Dr. Carroll was actively engaged in the practice of Army Family Medicine until his retirement in 2000. He also served in academic family medicine roles. As a Preventive Medicine physician he served in both clinical and academic settings. During his military career he held active clinical privileges in Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Preventive Medicine, and Occupational Medicine.

His physician executive assignments included command of the 5th Preventive Medicine Unit; the 5th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) and Moncrief Army Community Hospital as well as Preventive Medicine Officer, US Forces Korea. Other physician executive assignments included service as the Ambulatory Care Consultant to the Army Surgeon General; Preventive Medicine Consultant to the Army Surgeon General and Chief of Consultants to the Surgeon General.

He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice and a Diplomate of the American Board of Preventive Medicine. He is past member of the Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.

As the executive accountable for RMH’s Journey of Excellence, and as a former Baldrige Examiner, he is a strong proponent of performance excellence and the application of advanced approaches to performance excellence, such as Lean and Six Sigma.

Donna HahnDonna Hahn, RN, MSN
Vice President, Acute Care Services/Chief Nurse Executive

Donna Hahn joined RMH in 2007. Prior to that, she served as assistant vice president of patient care and community services at Augusta Medical Center for seven years.

Hahn holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Eastern Mennonite University and a master’s degree in nursing from the University of Virginia. She is completing a doctorate in nursing practice (DNP) in management from the University of Virginia.

Of her tenure with RMH, she says, “I am proud of the teamwork that has developed at RMH to form a culture where care of patients is our first priority. Silos were torn down to execute a safe transition to a new facility and reduce our serious safety events. I am extremely proud of the relationships that have grown between nursing and our physician partners in our quest to provide professional, compassionate care. Our nursing staff are consistently rated by our community as the best nurses over all our competitors."

Other achievements, she notes, include a partnership with a James Madison University professor of nursing who serves as mentor for research-based projects and nursing evidence-based practices. This occurred through the JMU-RMH Collaborative. “We are also excited to begin our official journey toward Magnet designation,” she adds.

Hahn is a member of the American Nurses Association and the American Organization of Nurse Executives. She is a member of the advisory boards for the nursing schools of Eastern Mennonite University, James Madison University and Blue Ridge Community College. She also serves as member and past president for the Commonwealth Center for Children Advisory Council.

Kay HarrisonKay Harrison
Vice President, Business Development

Kay Harrison joined RMH in 1990 and has served as director of Medical Records, director of Network Development and director of Community Health. She served as director of Planning and New Business Development from 2002 until 2007, when she became vice president, Business Development.

Before coming to RMH, Harrison served as the director of medical records and business development for a free-standing ambulatory surgery center in Orlando, Florida. She holds a master’s degree in healthcare administration from the Medical College of Virginia and a bachelor’s degree in medical record administration from the University of Central Florida.

Under Harrison’s leadership in community health, RMH received two prestigious national awards for its achievements in improving community health—one from the American Hospital Association and one from VHA Inc. As director of Planning and New Business Development, she moved RMH toward adoption of best practices in strategic planning.

RMH accomplishments she is proud of include receiving the AHA Living the Vision award for community health, new hospital planning, improving relationships with JMU, establishment of the RMH Medical Group, sustained market share growth and RMH becoming a LEED Gold-Certified hospital.

Rick HaushalterRick Haushalter
Senior Vice President, Operations/Chief Operating Officer

Rick Haushalter joined RMH in 1999 as vice president, finance/chief financial officer and was named senior vice president, Operations/Chief Operating Officer in 2007.

Rick came to RMH from Baptist Health Care in Pensacola, Florida. He served as vice president of finance for this six-hospital system for nine years. Previously, he had served as Chief Financial Officer for Cleveland Memorial Hospital in Shelby, N.C., and Moore Regional Hospital (now First Health) in Pinehurst, N.C.

A native of Ypsilanti, Michigan, Rick received a bachelor of business administration degree with a major in accounting from Eastern Michigan University. He also has a master’s degree in business administration from the University of West Florida.

Haushalter is currently serving on the board of First Step, an organization that provides shelter to individuals fleeing domestic violence. He also just completed a six-year term on the local Community Services Board.

Rick started his career in finance, and is pleased that he has been successful in the transition to operational leadership, where he has a passion for customer service.

He is most proud of the entire RMH team for their commitment to a safe hospital move in 2010. "Through establishing a clear vision, completing detailed planning, and garnering staff commitment, every person performed well and the move went off without a hitch. This was a tremendous learning experience, and one that we are continuing to learn from on our Journey of Excellence.”

Mike KingMike King
Senior Vice President, Finance, and Chief Financial Officer

Mike King joined RMH in late 2007 as senior vice president, Finance, and CFO. He received his bachelor’s degree in health care management, with a concentration in finance, from the University of Alabama, and earned his master’s degree in business administration from the University of Louisville, Ky.

King became certified as an emergency medical technician and used that training by working in a hospital while completing his undergraduate studies. “Working as an orderly was an incredible opportunity,” he says. “It provided me with the foundation to better understand the clinical aspects of what we do-- a somewhat unique perspective for a person in finance.”

King began his career at Humana, a proprietary health system, where he worked his way from financial analyst to chief financial officer of a 22-hospital region within the system. He later served as vice president of finance and managed care at Baptist Health Care in Pensacola, Florida, and as the chief financial officer for Jupiter Medical Center in Florida.

King is a Fellow of the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

John McGowan, MDJohn McGowan, MD
CEO, RMH Medical Group

John McGowan, MD, was named CEO of the RMH Medical Group in January 2010, but has been active as a physician and leader at RMH for over 20 years.

Dr. McGowan joined the RMH Medical Staff in 1987. He is board certified in internal medicine and nephrology. His diverse leadership experience includes six years as an RMH Medical Staff leader, serving on the Medical Executive Committee (secretary, vice chairman, and chairman) and as president of the RMH Medical Staff; 20 years of leadership positions with Harrisonburg Medical Associates (his former practice); and more than 12 years in leadership roles with RMH’s partner, Valley Health Plan.

Accomplishments of which he is most proud include his work as a nephrologist at RMH for 21 years; working with the team of the RMH Medical Group this past year to implement the new organizational business plan; being on the founding board and later co-chairperson of Valley Health Plan; and being a voting member of the RMH Board subcommittee that recommended the building of a new hospital.

Mike RozmusMike Rozmus
Vice President, Information Services/Chief Information Officer

Mike Rozmus joined RMH in 2003 as director, information technology/Chief Information Officer and became vice president, Information Services, in 2007.

Before coming to RMH, Rozmus served as vice president of information services for Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Frederick, Md. Before that he worked as the manager of information resources and as senior financial analyst at Pittsburgh Mercy Health System in Pittsburgh, Penn.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and a master’s in business administration with a focus on information technology from the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh.

He is most proud of the safe, successful move of the hospital and its medical group specialty practices to the new health campus. “This could only have been achieved by a great team, and I’m proud to work with such an exceptional group of healthcare professionals,” he says.

“We’ve been on a strategic journey to continually improve the safety and quality of patient care in our organization,” he continues. “My contribution in executing this strategy has been to lead a team that delivers information technology solutions that enable caregivers to provide the best care by having clinical information available to them wherever and whenever needed.”

Merv WebbMerv Webb
Vice President, RMH Foundation

Merv Webb joined RMH in 1976 to help the newly established RMH Foundation, and also to handle public relations and the RMH volunteer program.

Webb grew up in Wisconsin and received his bachelor’s degree from Spring Arbor University in Michigan. He later completed his master of business administration degree at James Madison University in Harrisonburg. Before moving to Harrisonburg, he was the unit representative and then executive director of the American Cancer Society in Macomb County, Michigan, just north of Detroit.

Since joining RMH, Webb has led the RMH Foundation to become a premier fundraising program. Some of the Foundation’s notable accomplishments include building a balanced program of annual support, capital campaigns and planned giving. Other accomplishments are successful capital campaigns for the RMH Cancer Center (1997) and for the new hospital (2010).

Under Webb’s direction, the Foundation also established an endowment program that now has an invested balance of $13 million. Webb also oversees the RMH Volunteer Auxiliary program.

Webb is a certified Fellow with the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP), the highest level of professional certification awarded by that organization. He has also served in numerous capacities with AHP, including membership on their international board and director of the Mid-Atlantic region. At their April 2011 conference in Baltimore, the Mid-Atlantic Region recognized Webb as their healthcare fundraiser of the year for his years of leadership. As an active member of the Association for Fundraising Philanthropy (AFP), he was recognized in 2004 as the fundraiser of the year for the local chapter.

An avid photographer, Webb donated many of his pictures for display in the new hospital. Webb is a past president of the Harrisonburg Kiwanis Club and is involved with many local charities.

In summarizing his career at RMH, Webb said, “It’s very rewarding to raise a great amount of money from great people for a great cause…and that being RMH. It’s equally satisfying to see how the money raised impacts the lives of our patients every day.”

Mark ZimmermanMark Zimmerman
Vice President, Human Resources Development and Support Services

Mark Zimmerman joined RMH in 2001. He has more than 25 years of experience in healthcare human resources management. Before coming to RMH, he served as vice president of human resources for Martin Memorial Health Systems in Stuart, Florida. He also has served in that capacity for Saratoga Hospital in Saratoga, New York and Mary Washington Hospital/MWH MediCorp in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Zimmerman earned a masters’ of business administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro; NC, and a bachelor of science in business administration from Bowling Green State University; Bowling Green, Ohio.

In commenting on what he regards as key achievements in his service to RMH, he notes, “For almost 30 years, my entire career (healthcare human resources administration) has been dedicated to serving people that ‘lay hands’ on patients or support those who do. Human Resources Development is all about creating a best place to work and I’d like to think that our team has made significant progress over the years. I think the RMH Leadership Institute has helped prepare our leaders to better serve the needs of our engaged workforce.”

He also notes the successful launch of the 403(b) matched savings plan for employees. “Less than 10 years ago we had about 500 employees saving for their retirement, and today we have almost 1,700 with more than $55 million in total fund assets,” he says.

Zimmerman is a member of the American Society of Healthcare Human Resources Administration and the Society for Human Resource Management, and is an active member and past president of the Rotary Club of Harrisonburg-Massanutten.
