RMH Heart Check Program Reaches Out to Spanish-Speaking Community

With the addition of Carmen Moreno, RD, MPH, the RMH Heart Check program now offers cardiovascular risk assessment and heart health education to Spanish-speaking adults.
Moreno, a registered dietitian, joined RMH in May. She will work with RMH Heart Health Navigator Maria Hostetter, RN, and will offer heart screenings to Spanish-speaking men and women who do not understand English.
Moreno has more than 20 years of nutrition and health-related work experience that focuses on prevention, wellness, behavior modification and qualitative health research. She has worked in San Diego, Calif., the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and Las Cruces, N. M.
Moreno earned her undergraduate degree in general dietetics from New Mexico State University and a master’s degree in public health from San Diego State University. Her professional career encompasses work in nutrition, obesity prevention, cardiovascular health, diabetes, general wellness and the promotion of physical activity.
Moreno was born in New Mexico to immigrant Mexican parents. Spanish is her first language, and she learned to speak English in school.
“Heart disease is the number one killer of Latinas in the United States,” Moreno said. “Heart Check is addressing this growing epidemic by offering an exceptional program to Spanish-speaking people, who are in great need of this service. We’re fortunate RMH supports this heart-healthy endeavor.”
According to Thomson Reuters, about 7.56 percent of the population of Rockingham County, and about 11.6 percent of the population of Harrisonburg, is Hispanic. The first cardiac surgery patient at RMH, on Jan. 22, was a Hispanic male, Carlos Garcia, of Harrisonburg.
