Robert Underwood, MD, has been named chief medical information officer (CMIO) at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
In this part-time role, Dr. Underwood will serve as an educator and advocate on behalf of RMH physicians and other clinical staff regarding clinical information technology. He will continue to work part-time as a physician in the RMH Emergency Department.
“Dr. Underwood is a well-respected clinician and brings a strong interest in clinical quality and performance improvement to RMH,”said Mike Rozmus, vice president, Information Services, and chief information officer. “The caliber of Dr. Underwood’s physician leadership is a critical success factor for healthcare information technology initiatives.”

“I am excited about the evolution of information systems in health care,” Underwood said. “I am a physician first, but the development of information technology is clinically relevant. I look forward to serving as a liaison between the medical staff and IT staff.”
Underwood is a graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. He completed undergraduate work at the United States Military Academy at West Point and served in multiple command and staff positions in the United States Army and Army National Guard.
