Nancy Shomo, coordinator of Grief and Loss Support Services at RMH, recently was credentialed as a certified grief counselor.

The certification was granted by the American Academy of Grief Counseling through the American Institute of Healthcare Professionals.

Requirements for certification included 100 hours of study in advanced course work in grief counseling and bereavement. Certified grief counselors may pursue fellowship status, which Shomo intends to do.

Shomo holds a bachelor’s degree in social work from James Madison University. As part of her role, she is certified to work with individuals and families experiencing pregnancy loss and to train healthcare professionals who work with pregnancy loss patients.

Shomo has been an RMH employee for almost 10 years. She became coordinator of Grief and Loss Services in 2003. Grief and Loss Support Services is a part of the RMH Center for Behavioral Health. For more information about GLSS, call 433-4427.
