The Alpha Phi sorority of James Madison University has raised $14,235 for RMH Womens Heart Check through fundraising events including a 5K and Red Dress gala. Both health centers serve a low-income population at high risk for heart disease. Heart Check is a heart health screening and education program that assesses a person’s risk for coronary artery disease, the most common form of heart disease today and the number one cause of death among adults in America.
“The RMH Heart Check program is a unique educational service that has served nearly 800 women and 150 men since its start in 2006,” said Maria Hostetter, R.N., RMH Heart Check navigator. “With the outstanding support of the Alpha Phi Sorority of JMU, we will be able to provide, at no cost, heart health screenings in English and Spanish to women served by the Free Clinic and Community Health Center.”
The sorority raised the money through a week of events in February, including a 5K race and a Red Dress gala (part of the American Heart Association’s national campaign for women’s heart health awareness). Through its annual Cardiac Care Award, the Alpha Phi Foundation helps fund research and education programs that support women’s cardiac health.
The Alpha Phi Sorority has raised a total of nearly $30,000 for RMH Heart Check through its annual fundraisers since 2006. The funds are deposited into the RMH Heart Fund, which is managed through the RMH Foundation. For information on how to contribute to this fund, contact Hostetter at (540) 433-4319.
