The RMH Volunteers: A century of service to RMH and community
For 100 years now, RMH and its patients have benefited from the selfless contributions of time and talents provided by members of our community through the RMH Volunteers
"Our volunteers are the lifeblood of RMH," says Chris Delaughter, director, Volunteer Services. They give generously of their time and their many talents to help both our staff and our patients. We are grateful for their service, acknowledging that their only 'pay' is our thank-you."
The Ladies Auxiliary of Rockingham Memorial Hospital was formed in 1911 by 14 area women. The organizations goal was to raise funds to furnish patient rooms in the new hospital that was under construction and to open October 1912.
Today, the RMH Volunteer Auxiliary has about 500 members, including men (they were admitted in the (70s and the word "Ladies" was dropped from the name) and youth. Delaughter notes that students as young as 12 or 14 can volunteer alongside a family member as "junior volunteer partners,: and many service opportunities are available to older youth, including high school and college students. There are also options for working adults who want to volunteer before or after work on occasional weekends - whether for service work or fundraising.
"Like everything that is done in this hospital, everything a volunteer does is for the ultimate benefit of the patient, whether that is ringing up a sale at the gift shop, driving someone around on the courtesy shuttle, cutting name tags off of comfort toys, or helping family members find a patient," Delaughter says. "If they can help make the patients more comfortable and a little less stressed, that is certainly the purpose of their service here."
The largest segment of volunteers is retired adults who want to add a new dimension to their lives "It's a great way to meet a whole new group of people and connect with people in the community for as little as a few hours a month to every single week," Delaughter says. "There is a great deal of flexibility around other activities such as golfing, church, vacations, family.
