Have you seen the new Toyota commercial where the 20-something daughter makes fun of her parents for not being â€œsocialâ€ because they only have 19 Facebook friends? Then the commercial cuts to the parents â€“ who are out mountain biking and living it up with friends while their young daughter sits at home in front of the computer.
This is a great lesson on what it means to age gracefully.
I recently came across research from the National Institute on Aging that demonstrated the relationship between physically and socially active seniors and healthy aging. Iâ€™m excited to share this information with you!
Healthy aging involves more than simply exercising and eating a healthy diet. Emerging research indicates that engaging in activities you enjoy may also help maintain your wellbeing. People who are sociable, generous and goal-oriented tend to be happier and less depressed than other people. Older adults who participate in what they feel are meaningful activities report to researchers that they feel healthier and happier than those who do not. Early studies have also found that people involved in social activities and/or who have hobbies may be at lower risk for some health problems, including dementia, and may even live longer, healthier lives.
